Comment automation: private replies, public replies and Meta's rules

Comment automation comes in two forms: a private reply that lands in the commenter’s messages, and a public reply posted under the comment for everyone who sees the post. Meta allows both for Facebook Pages and professional Instagram accounts, but limits the private reply to one message per comment, sent within seven days of the comment.

This article explains the difference between the two, what Meta allows for each, which comments deserve an automated answer and which need a person, and how Mujib handles the comments on your posts.

What is the difference between a private and a public reply to a comment?

Section titled “What is the difference between a private and a public reply to a comment?”

A private reply is a message only the commenter reads; a public reply speaks for your business in front of all your followers. So each one suits a different job.

Private replyPublic reply
Where it appearsIn the commenter’s messagesUnder the comment itself
Who reads itThe commenter onlyEveryone who opens the post
Good forPrices, details, bookingA thank-you, or saying you replied in private
The riskA message nobody asked for, if they asked nothingA sentence in front of everyone, hard to take back

The working rule: details in private, a short word in public. Someone who asks “how much?” under a post gets the price in their messages, and your followers see under their comment that you answered.

What does Meta allow when you reply to comments?

Section titled “What does Meta allow when you reply to comments?”

Meta lets your Page or professional account send the commenter one private message within seven days, and reply publicly under the comment. These are each platform’s limits as published:

  • Facebook: according to the Messenger Platform private replies guide, only one message can be sent to someone who commented on a post or comment on your Page, within seven days of the post or comment being created. The conversation continues only if the person replies, and then within the 24-hour window.
  • Instagram: according to the Instagram Platform private replies guide, this covers comments on a post, reel, story, Live or ad post. One message, within seven days of the comment, and comments on a Live can only get a private reply during the broadcast. Follow-ups are possible only if the person replies, and within 24 hours of that reply.
  • Public replies: the Instagram comment moderation API lets you reply to a comment, hide or delete it, and turn comments off on a post.

The key consequence: a private reply to a comment is a single shot. If it is wrong or generic, you cannot send a second message to fix it until the customer replies.

Which comments should a business answer automatically?

Section titled “Which comments should a business answer automatically?”

Not every comment is a question: many are praise or a tag for a friend, some are complaints, and a share of them are questions that need an answer. Sort comments into four kinds, and choose what fits each:

Kind of commentExampleSuggested reply
Question“How much?”, “Where are you?”A private reply with the answer, then a short public note saying you replied
Praise“Great work, thank you”A like or a short public thank-you, no private message
Complaint“I waited and nobody answered me”A person reads it and answers it, no automated reply
OtherTagging a friend, an emojiNothing, or a like

Why not send a private message to everyone who commented? Because someone who wrote “lovely” asked for nothing, and a sales message they did not ask for reads as spam. Why no automated reply to a complaint? Because a wrong reply reaches someone who is already upset, in front of your followers if it is public, and the one private message allowed is gone.

How do you write a public reply that does not sound automated?

Section titled “How do you write a public reply that does not sound automated?”

Make the public reply a short, friendly sentence, vary its wording, and keep links out of it. Practical advice:

  • Several wordings, not one sentence: the same sentence under hundreds of comments reads to your followers as automation. Prepare different wordings with the same meaning.
  • No links: a link under a customer’s comment looks to followers like comment spam. Put the link in the private reply.
  • Details in private: the full price, conditions and times are written to the person who asked, not under the post.
  • No public arguments: if the comment is a complaint, the only fitting public reply is a sentence saying your team will get in touch, written by a person.
  • In your Page’s voice: a stiff formal reply under a friendly post stands out for the wrong reasons.

How do you use keywords in comment replies?

Section titled “How do you use keywords in comment replies?”

A keyword is a common campaign technique: you ask followers to comment a word such as “price”, and everyone who writes it receives a ready answer in private. It works when you get three things right:

  1. Every spelling: people write “price”, “prices” and the word in Arabic, and they make typos when they type fast. Gather all the variants in one rule.
  2. A fixed text you write: a ready answer cannot invent a price, and it reaches the hundredth commenter exactly as it reached the first.
  3. Complaints never match: a comment like “your prices are too high” contains “prices”, but sending it the price list makes the complaint worse.

Mujib gathers the comments on your posts on the Comments page, sorts each one, then acts on it according to the table you choose. The full setup is in Comments.

  • Sorting: each comment is sorted as Question, Praise, Complaint or Other.
  • Your table: in What we reply to you choose for each kind: nothing, a reaction, a private reply, a public reply, or a private reply with a public note. And you choose who writes it: the agent, from your business information, or a fixed reply you write.
  • Complaints always go to your team: Mujib never replies to a complaint automatically, in public or in private, whatever the setting.
  • The public reply is your sentence: the agent never writes a public reply in its own words, and links are refused in it. The public note is only published after the private message has actually been delivered.
  • Keywords: in Words with a ready answer you set the words, their spellings and the reply, and Mujib catches small typos. See Keyword replies.
  • Try before you switch on: in Try a comment type a comment the way a customer would, to see whether a reply applies to it.
  • The post as context: when the agent writes a private reply, it reads your post’s text to understand what a bare “how much?” refers to, but it takes prices and details from your business information only.

All of this runs while Let the agent answer questions automatically is on and the agent itself is switched on. Public posting under your posts is available on request for each business; without it, only the private reply is sent. And since Instagram’s API does not allow liking a comment, the reaction there is a heart posted as a reply, and only where your business is allowed to post publicly.

The comment reply table set for each kind of comment
The “What we reply to” table sets what happens to each kind of comment, and who writes the answer to a question: the agent or a fixed reply you write.

Why are some private replies to comments refused?

Section titled “Why are some private replies to comments refused?”

They are refused because Meta accepts only one private reply per comment, within seven days of it, and on Instagram none on a Live comment once the broadcast is over. Among the causes:

  • Seven days have passed since the comment.
  • A private reply was already sent for the same comment, from Mujib or from the Page inbox.
  • The commenter does not accept private messages from your Page.
  • The comment was on a Live that has ended.

What to do in each case is in Comment reply refused. And since a private reply is a single shot, make your business information complete before you switch automation on, as described in Knowledge base.

Frequently asked questions

How many private messages can I send to someone who commented?

One per comment under Meta's rules, within seven days of the comment. You cannot message them again unless they reply to your message.

Does a private reply to a comment open a full conversation?

Not on its own. The conversation starts if the commenter replies to your message, and then the standard reply window applies from their reply.

Should I reply automatically to every comment?

No. Questions deserve an answer, praise needs no more than a like or a short thank-you, and a complaint is read and answered by a person. A private message to everyone who commented reads as spam.

Does the Mujib agent write public replies under my posts?

Never in its own words. A public reply in Mujib is a fixed sentence you write, and it is only published when public posting is enabled for your business, which is available on request.

Does Mujib reply automatically to complaints in the comments?

No, under any setting. A complaint stays with your team to read and answer; it gets no private message, no public reply and no like.
